As a rat, Remy is expected to place family first and foremost, a cog in the wheel of the clan. He’s not supposed to think for himself, or have dreams beyond the colony. His job is to collect food, make sure that the nest doesn’t go hungry. Unfortunately, he isn’t your typical rat. He sickens at the thought of eating garbage and although he does hold family in high priority, he can’t help who he is: A rat who simply adores food and the fine art of making the greatest chef style dishes. He’s fascinated by humans, by how they don’t just survive. In his words, “they discover, they create”. Food is his passion, and cooking, his craft. Teaching himself how to read, he’s constantly trying out new recipes, going through Cook Book after Cook Book and finding new ways to prepare and make food better than it already is. He dreams of becoming a famous chef and adding something to this world. Following after his hero, the famous chef Auguste Gusteau, and he’s willing to do anything to get there. Although he can be a bit modest when it comes to his talent, he often finds himself believing that his opinion is the only one that matters, and that, of course, it’s the only one that’s right.
Remy is a grey rat (Brown Rat in breed) with a highly developed sense of taste and smell. He's the only one in his clan with this unique talent, thus earning him a special job as the poison-checker (to his dismay).
When separated from his clan on a traumatizing trip down a sewer. As a way to keep himself in check, Remy's mind re-created his idol, Gusteau, as a figment who is always there for moral support. He also gives Remy someone to talk to.
